Welcome to Nuclear Engineering

The Nuclear Engineering (NE) Division is one of the divisions within the Energy Sciences and Engineering Directorate of Argonne National Laboratory. Our mission is to advance the design and operation of nuclear energy systems and to apply our nuclear energy-related expertise to current and emerging programs of national and international significance.

The NE Division participates in key DOE Nuclear Energy programs such as the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative, the Generation IV Initiative, and the Nuclear Hydrogen Initiative. We also have major roles in national security and non-proliferation programs conducted by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and other agencies.

Division personnel additionally contribute to improving the operation of existing nuclear energy systems and to resolving issues related to their performance and safety. We have a key role in advancing major Laboratory initiatives in such diverse areas as transportation, hydrogen generation and computational science. Finally, we contribute engineering expertise to the design, operation and decommissioning of major facilities at Argonne and elsewhere.

Saving Lives with Medical Ice Slurry Coolants
An ice-slurry technology developed by NE scientists promises to give doctors more time to save the lives of emergency patients, as well as to protect the heart, brain, kidneys and spinal cord of patients during planned surgeries. Read the full article at:

Dr. Sasan Bakhtiari Sasan Bakhtiari (NDE Section) to take part in annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium
NE scientist Sasan Bakhtiari is one of the 82 young engineers who have been selected to take part in the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 14th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. The two-and-a-half day event will bring together engineers aged 30 to 45 who are performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines. The participants — from industry, academia, and government — were nominated by fellow engineers or organizations and chosen from more than 230 applicants. Read full story at:

Argonne celebrates the 66th anniversary of the world’s first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction

CELEBRATING 66 YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENT:
On Dec. 2, 1942 the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction was achieved in Chicago and Argonne’s rich heritage in the development of nuclear reactors began.

The Mission of NE is to apply the expertise gained for Argonne’s historic charge of developing advanced nuclear reactor systems to problems of national and international significance.
